A recent study reveals that patients who come off blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who end traditional lifestyle programs.
Published data in a leading medical journal shows that while obese individuals can lose about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Individuals using such medications must be aware of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain suggests a reversion to original weight within about a year and a half.
Comparing Approaches
The study, which reviewed dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with older methods.
Scientists emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through dieting generally have a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Explaining the Quick Regain
Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the jabs accounts for the amplified regain.
These medications mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls hunger.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."
An Ongoing Issue?
Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians argue that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the therapy should be considered life-long.
This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "underscore the persistent nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Experiences
Users who have come off the jabs describe a intense return of appetite.
"It was like a switch that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," described a patient.
This difficulty is compounded if users have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Widespread Use
Figures indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest being substantial.
- Adoption is higher among females than men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
- Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, researchers stress that while the jabs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated lifestyle changes.
